My Bike Accident
My accident happened one year and seven months ago. On the 10th of July 1998 at about 1:20am. I was coming home, driving along the main road going about 60 and an on coming car swerved in front of me to get into the side road, and before I knew it I was trying to swerve out of his way, but my leg caught the back of the car, causing me to fly off my bike, and my bike landing on my leg, and slid under a parked car.
My leg was broken in 3 places, the femur (thighbone), the tip fibula (under the knee) and my ankle. They inserted a metal pole in my femur so the bone could grow together and a steel plate by my ankle and I had pins coming out of my tip fibula. I crushed my main artery and my smaller veins in my leg, they had to cut half my muscle away in order to repair it. I had to then have a skin graph to close my leg up. Leaving a scar all the way down my leg on both sides.
I was in hospital at Groote Schuur for 3 months. The first 2 weeks of the 3 months I was unconscious. I have had 8 operations on my leg and had to go back in 6 months for another operation, this time for a bone graph as my tip fibula was not mending, they took bone from my hip and inserted it where the bone was not knitting together.
I was in a full cast for the majority of the year and seven months, using crutches to get around and for the last 2 months I've been walking with a leg brace. I've been going to the doctor once a month for a check up.
Now a year and seven months later, I'm walking, I can bend my knee and I hardly need to use my crutches, but still use the leg brace. Without the physio and the exercising everyday, I would probably still need crutches to balance me and help me walk.
I'm financially struggling at the moment to pay my doctors fees. I've started a small business from home fixing vehicles and giving services. If you would like to help please support my business
This was when I was active and sporty.
